Dove House Academy

Computing

Learners study the full Computing curriculum at Dove House which is made up of two strands: Computer Science and ICT.

Through carefully planned sequential work personalised to pupils’ needs and abilities, pupils apply and challenge their understanding across a broad and balanced range of contexts.

Through these lessons, our aim is that pupils will:

  • Be prepared to participate independently in a rapidly changing technological world.
  • Be equipped with skills so they can fully participate in society safely.
  • Develop skills that enable them to be employed across different sectors.
  • Develop and improve their independent problem solving, resilience & communication skills.
  • Gain qualifications that are best suited to their needs and abilities as well as being relevant and ambitious in preparing them for adulthood and future employment.

Key Stage 3

The Key Stage 3 curriculum is made up of a balance of both ICT & Computer Science units.

Within ICT, pupils develop a range of functional skills using Microsoft Office within real-life contexts safely. In year 7 the focus is on using internet & presentation software to research and plan a holiday. These skills build progressively, where for example in Year 9, there a larger focus on using spreadsheet software to calculate costing and profit from running a coffee shop.

Within Computer Science, pupils have access to practical programming in a range of contexts. They begin with using a block-based programming environment (Scratch) and Probots (car robots) and progress onto using BBC Microbits and text-based programming languages (e.g. HTML & Python).

Key Stage 4

All pupils receive ICT lessons regularly as part of the Life Skills curriculum.

Pupils gain qualifications that are best suited to their needs and abilities as well as being relevant and ambitious in preparing them for adulthood and future employment.
